Our fabulous Craft Club member Sheila Shakesby was only too happy to take on the challenge, when asked by Charity Manager Jayne to make some headbands for the Day Unit at Castle Hill Hospital to be used by those undergoing treatment and opting to use the ‘Cold Cap’.
For those who are not aware of what the ‘Cold Cap’ is, it is ‘Scalp Cooling’ device worn on the head, during each chemotherapy treatment and can help to reduce the effects of losing your hair. Whilst not 100% successful for all, Charity Manager Jayne has found during her recent treatment it has significantly reduce her hair loss. BUT, we are all unique and everyone will have varying success rates, plus it’s not for everyone as it can be uncomfortable and, did I mention very cold!
To aid with comfort, a headband is worn around the forehead to help stop the cold cap marking or irritating the skin. Additionally, a ‘Ph neutral’ conditioner is applied to the hair prior to the cold cap being fitted. This helps to nourish the hair during treatment and also to helps to prevent the hair from sticking to the cold cap.
Member Sheila, has loving made 10 headbands as a stock to be kept in the Day Unit, to be given to those who forget to bring a headband, whilst Charity Manager Jayne has so far donated 7 bottles of ‘Simple Gentle Hair’ conditioner to be used by patients.
